There are several technologies that can provide identity federation/federated SSO, such as SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) and Liberty Alliance ID-FF (Identity Federation Framework). Any federation technology is predicated upon the establishment of trust relationships between enterprises, which allow the Service Provider to retrieve and validate identity data from the Identity Provider on-the-fly.
