Identity Federation
Identity Federation means exchanging user identity data between enterprises. Often this is done to facilitate single sign-On between enterprises, which is also known as Federated SSO.
There are several technologies that can provide identity federation/federated SSO, such as SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) and LA ID-FF (Liberty Alliance Identity Federation Framework). Any federation technology is predicated upon the establishment of trust relationships between enterprises, which allow the Service Provider to retrieve and validate identity data from the Identity Provider on-the-fly.
