Liberty Alliance Identity Federation Framework

Identity Federation Framework (ID-FF) is a standard created by the Liberty Alliance Project to enable identity federation between multiple enterprises via web services. LA ID-FF uses web services to provide federated Single Sign-On / Sign-Off (logout), and identity federation and de-federation. It allows a user to authenticate at one enterprise and experience single sign-on to another enterprise by enabling the enterprises to exchange information about his/her identity, authentication, and session information.

ID-FF also provides important mechanisms for maintaining privacy while federating identities. It uses pseudonyms as the keys to link federated accounts between enterprises, so that one enterprise does not need to know the user's actual identifier at another enterprise. This, along with support for anonymous pseudonyms, enables the construction of flexible federations that can adhere to privacy laws and regulations as well as the individual users' privacy decisions.
